Holden Special Vehicles was established in 1987 through a collaboration between Holden and Tom Walkinshaw Racing. This partnership aimed to create a lineup of high-performance vehicles based on popular Holden models. By integrating upgraded engines, enhanced suspensions and brakes, as well as sporty aesthetics both inside and out, HSV emerged as Australia's response to the sports car market, epitomized by its tagline - "I just want one."
In 2001, the Monaro stood as the premier sports coupe within the Holden lineup, while the GTS took the lead as HSV's flagship offering. Notably, the GTS held the distinction of being the first Australian production car with a 300kW power output.
Beneath the hood, the focal point of the GTS was its powerplant. Retaining the 5.7-litre capacity of its LS1 engine, the Callaway C4B (as it was known) underwent extensive modifications departing from its Chevrolet origins. These changes encompassed a distinct camshaft, upgraded valve springs and retainers, stainless valves, mild porting enhancements to the cylinder heads, and an enlarged throttle body.
Further upgrades for the GTS included the incorporation of six-piston front calipers from AP Racing, coupled with a Hydra-Trak LSD. The package also encompassed bespoke 18-inch wheels.
The vehicle in our possession is a 2003 HSV GTS Coupe II, adorned in striking Accent Grey Metallic complemented by a Black Leather interior. This exemplar is a true spectacle, maintaining a condition akin to that of a brand-new car. It comes complete with a comprehensive and up-to-date service history, HSV literature, a toolkit, and a pair of keys.
Its flawless state is akin to that of a new vehicle, having been meticulously maintained by what could only be HSV enthusiast, serving as a testament to the owner's unwavering passion.
On the open road, the 6.0-litre engine gracefully deploys its 300kW power output, accompanied by a more aggressive and resonant note, yet maintaining a commendable level of smoothness. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is accomplished in just over 5 seconds. The suspension yields a firm, almost taut ride around town, which transitions to a more compliant and comfortable demeanor reminiscent of grand touring on highways. This comfort endures even as road conditions deteriorate, rendering the GTS an exquisite touring companion.
Poised for its next devoted guardian, this exceptional piece of Australian automotive history stands as an indispensable addition for any collector passionate about preserving such a unique heritage.
