When it first debuted in 1969, the Ford Mustang Boss 302 earned high praise from 'Car and Driver', who declared it "the greatest handling Ford to come out of Dearborn."
Developed by Ford to compete in the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) Trans-Am racing series. The Boss 302 was named after the engine it was equipped with, a 302 cubic inch (4.9-litre) V8 that was specifically designed for the car.
The engine featured a high-revving solid lifter camshaft, forged pistons, and large port cylinder heads. It was rated at 290 horsepower, but in reality, it was closer to 350 horsepower.
To handle the power, the Boss 302 was equipped with a heavy-duty suspension system, quick-ratio steering, and front disc brakes. It also had unique styling features such as a front spoiler, blacked-out hood, and side stripes.
With such extensive modifications the Boss 302 was a successful race car, winning the SCCA Trans-Am championship in 1970 with driver Parnelli Jones.
Production was limited, with only 1,628 examples produced in 1969 and 7,013 produced in 1970.
We’re pleased to present this 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in what can only be described as immaculate with 'numbers matching' and a concours factory finish.
Originally from Massachusetts, USA the car was imported to Australia in 2011. What followed was 'nut and bolt' restoration, with new old stock parts used wherever possible.
During the engine restoration, all correct and unique Boss parts were retained, including the rev-limiter, Autolite Holley 780 carburetor, Carter X fuel pump, heavy-duty radiator, and nodular iron 3.91 ratio 9" Traction-Lok diff.
This Boss 302 'Sportsroof' is one of only 1,287 models finished in Grabber Green paintwork, with a black vinyl-trimmed interior featuring Hi-Back bucket seats. It boasts colour-keyed racing mirrors and a functional front spoiler, and rolls on 15-inch 'Magnum 500' wheels wrapped in high-walled Goodyear Polyglas GT Tyres.
Included with the vehicle is the original sales invoice, owner's manual, registration certificate, Marti Deluxe report, and a letter from Ford confirming the original specification based on the VIN.
The most recent maintenance was carried out at an indicated 43,860 miles by Pete's Classic Garage in Melbourne. This included fitting four new Koni shock absorbers, two upper control arms, a heater core, a spring saddle, a pump seal kit, a clutch pedal pad, and trim, a carburetor rebuild kit, pressure switches for the brakes, and two halogen sealed-beam globes.
After being with it’s last enthusiast owner for a few years, this Boss 302 now needs nothing more than to be enjoyed, whether on the show stand, in its new owner’s garage, or on the
open road, where its rebuilt small-block V8 and reconditioned four-speed manual gearbox will no doubt captivate its new custodian at every opportunity.
