The Ferrari 250 GTE was Ferrari’s first four-seat model and was successful enough to spur the evolution of a series of Ferrari 2+2s that used the same engineering as the other 250 range of performance Ferraris; namely, the 250 GTO; 250 GT SWB; 250 California Spider; 250 Pininfarina PF coupe and cabriolets. According to Enzo Ferrari’s son Pierro Ferrari, at that time, the 250 GTE was his father’s favourite car.
This particular 1962 Ferrari 250-GTE, chassis number 3265, was delivered new by official Ferrari agents W.H. Lowe of Balwyn, Victoria, to Melbourne clothing retailer Mr T.A. Maxwell. According to a family friend, the performance of the Ferrari frightened Maxwell to the extent that soon after taking delivery, he sold it to Adelaide resident Mr Oliver Young. In 1965, South Australian weapons research scientist, Dr Garth Morgan bought the car, owning it for the next 34 years until he sold it in January 1999 to Will Abel Smith Kidman, great-grandson of cattle baron Sir Sidney Kidman. The car remained in Adelaide and, in 2008, Abel Smith sold it to Adelaide financial adviser Nick Storer.
In August 2014, former international racing driver and Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan AM purchased the 3265. Amazingly, after 57 years, this Ferrari 250 GTE has covered just 32,600 miles. Meticulously detailed by Gerard Miller’s Marque Restoration company, with special care taken in regard to its originality, this beautiful GTE still has its original seats, door trims and carpets.
